Should I get Microblading or traditional Eyebrow Tattooing? What are the key Differences and Why They Matter?

Microblading is a form of cosmetic tattooing that uses a manual hand tool to create delicate hairstrokes to replicate the look of actual hairs. The size and thickness of the blades can determine how the hair stroke will look, and if microblading is done properly, will create a crisp line that mimics the look of natural hair. Microblading, while similar to traditional eyebrow tattooing still has many differences. Traditional tattooing methods include the insertion of a needle or needles into the skin in a tapping movement. This can be done either by hand or machine, but machine is most common. This movement pushes a lot of pigment into the skin, causing the tattoo to be permanent and also uses a completely different ink.

So, what are the differences, and should they really matter to you? Let us compare here:

Microblading does not allow for a lot of pigment to be forced into the skin, which leads to a shorter lifespan than more traditional tattooing methods. Microblading lasts on average, 12–18 months without touchups. Over time, the ink will fade significantly compared to a traditional eyebrow tattoo. Depending on your skin, it may eventually disappear. Traditional tattooed eyebrows tattoos last a lifetime typically. One may say well that is sounds like a good deal why not go the traditional route, and perhaps the traditional route is for you, but first let us list some pros and cons below.

Pros of Microblading:

  • Ifyou want to change the shape of your brow, the style of your eyebrow or even the color you have that option with Microblading as it fades with time, you do not have that option with traditional tattooing.
  • Microblading uses a completely different kind of ink than traditional tattooing. With microblading, if there are any color changes that are not desirable there are color modifiers in place to help cool down, or warm up a color to the desired range.
  • More believable hand drawn appearance, not solid, Microblading is meant to blend not stand out like a sore thumb if done by a good artist
  • Artists do not want clients to feel uncomfortable during the microblading process, so we apply a topical anesthetic on the skin to numb the eyebrow area for maximum comfort
  • Provides a youthful attractive full eyebrow
  • microblading pigment is specifically designed to fade into a lighter version of the color used so the patient retains a realistic appearance.
  • Microblading artists are trained specifically for Microblading, this is what specialize in cosmetic tattoos are what we do.

Cons of Microblading:

  • May be more expensive
  • Will fade over time without proper upkeep
  • Not suitable for all skin types

Pros of traditional tattoo:

  • With a traditional tattoo it will last you longer than Microblading
  • May be less expensive than cosmetic tattooing
  • If you never want to alter your brow shape or color again this is a good option

Cons of traditional eyebrow tattoo:

  • if you are unhappy with your brow your likely only option would be some form of removal which can be extremely costly and very time consuming.
  • Traditional tattoos can sometimes give an artificial or pencil drawn look over time
  • As tattoo ink fades, it often develops a blue-green colored tint giving the sharpie brow appearance
  • The ink from using a tattoo machine could end up expanding over time, causing the brows to look thicker in appearance
  • Painful
  • Looks flat not dimensional
  • Typically, are not trained to do cosmetic tattoos, just traditional tattoos

Both forms have pro and cons. This article is not meant to sway your decision either way. You must decide what best matches you and your lifestyle.
